🏉 Ricky Walford
Ricky Walford came from Walgett and played 233 first-grade rugby league games for Eastern Suburbs, North Sydney and St George between 1982 and 1996. He also played in NSW's winning 1990 State of Origin side. His hometown connection continued through the school carnival established in his honour in 1993. What began as a local initiative developed into a gathering drawing teams from across north-western NSW. The event gives younger players a chance to compete while keeping a successful former local player's name attached to participation, friendship and sport in the district.
🤝 George Rose
Former NRL player George Rose maintained a practical connection with Walgett through education and community work. With organiser Donna Dennis-Horan, he helped develop a school attendance programme offering weekly, monthly and annual incentives. In 2017, students and teachers travelled to the NRL grand final as part of that effort. Rose's own experience as a former pupil made the school a natural place to contribute. Sporting visibility became a way to encourage classroom participation, alongside scholarships and other community roles recognised by the rugby league's own account of his work.
⛏️ Charlie Nettleton
Charlie Nettleton was among the early prospectors who turned Lightning Ridge's known opal deposits into a developing mining field. The shire's heritage study places his work with Jack Murray in 1901–02, before the larger rush and the establishment of the town. Local businessmen later backed further prospecting, reflecting the uncertain business of finding a marketable seam rather than simply picking treasure off the surface. The historical society's timeline traces that work through contemporary records. A later statue honoured Nettleton's place in the mining story that transformed this part of Walgett Shire.
